TYLER, Texas - In the opening day of competition at the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday, Northwest went 5-1 in singles competition, advancing multiple players through the main draw.
Macarena Arisio,
Claudia Lopez Chaparro and Laura Cámara Blanco each started the day with victories in straight sets, while All-MACCC selection
Mattie Sanders picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win in flight four singles.
Allie Rawles also earned a gritty 7-5, 6-2 decision in flight six, with the Lady Rangers' lone singles loss coming from
Meg Daves in flight five.
Arisio began play at 8 A.M. in flight one, making quick work of Laken Williams (South Arkansas Community College). Lopez Chaparro followed with a complete shutout of Isabelle Rodrigue of McHenry County College, and Cámara Blanco scored a clean sweep of Allyson English (Moraine Valley Community College) in flight three.
Sanders took care of business against Sarvin Salehi of Mercer County Community College, while Daves dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Kaitlyn Nicholshy (Weatherford College). Rawles earned her opening round win against Imara Achala of Pratt Community College.
In doubles, the Lady Rangers weren't as dominant, as the tandem of Arisio and Lopez Chaparro fell by a 6-3, 6-3 final to Iowa Central's duo of Silvia Fernandez De La Pradila and Danira Kenmeni. In flight two doubles, the Northwest duo of Cámara Blanco and Daves dropped a 6-1, 6-0 final to Pratt's Sandra Dominguez and Barbara Mattar.Â
In flight three, the doubles tandem of Rawles and Sanders earned a first round bye. The sophomore duo will compete on Sunday at 1 P.M. against Mercer County's Salehi and Makenna Swasey.
