FLORENCE, S.C. - Three victories in the consolation draw of singles competition were the highlight for Northwest tennis in Wednesday's schedule of the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships.
Miguel Lazaga Robayna,
Cole Stoddard and
Joshua Tedford picked up victories in flights two, four and five, respectively, advancing within the consolation draws. Lazaga Robayna defeated Anderson Fernandes (Marion Military Institute) by an 8-6 final in the consolation draw of flight two singles, while Stoddard picked up an 8-6 win against Itawamba's Santiago Diaz in flight four.Â
Joshua Tedford capped off the consolation victories with an 8-3 triumph over Hayden George-Duncan (Southwestern Illinois College) in flight five. Freshman
Brady Holliman gave it a strong go in the consolation draw of flight six singles, but fell 9-8 to A.J. Mills (Southwestern Illinois College).
For the Rangers that advanced through the main draw, the competition in the Round of 16 was not as kind.
Luca Morris dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Minjae Kim (Collin College) in flight one, followed by a 6-1, 6-0 loss by
Holden Cooke in flight three against Valentin Greco (Cowley).
In doubles, Northwest dropped all three main draw matches, ending the Rangers' run in doubles competition. Morris and Tedford fell 6-0, 6-0 to the Collin College duo of Kim and Jose Castillo in flight one, while Cooke and Lazaga Robayna dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to the Weatherford College duo of Marko Filipovic and Andres Serrano.
In flight three, Stoddard and
Gabriel Koonce fell 6-2, 6-0 to Ferran Bonastre and Jace Moody of Wallace State.
An additional singles match was also played, thanks to the earlier backlog in competition due to rain. Lazaga Robayna's consolation draw run came to an end in the quarterfinals, due to an 8-0 loss to Cem Atlamis of Collin College.
Northwest will continue competition in the tournament with the consolation draw winners on Thursday.
