CLARKSDALE - Hits and runs were aplenty for No. 8 Northwest on Tuesday afternoon, as the Rangers swept Coahoma by a pair of 21-0 and 17-1 victories.
Northwest took the first game in four innings and picked up the win in the finale in a shortened five-inning decision.
With the 21-0 win in Game 1, the Rangers tied for the most runs recorded in a single game under coach
Chelsea Bramlett's leadership. The last game to feature 21 Northwest runs came on April 6, 2021 in a 21-10 road win at Mississippi Delta.
In the opener,
Ellie Fryar and
Carleigh Calarco provided the biggest spark at the plate for the Rangers, earning three base hits apiece. In all, Northwest finished with 22 base hits, including four doubles, three triples and a
Carly Dunigan home run.
Catelyn Brown (6-1) and
Alyssa Boswood combined for four innings in the circle, with each freshman recording a strikeout. The Lady Tigers were held to just one base hit in the loss.
In the second game, Northwest started off slow and only scored two runs in the first inning. That all changed in the second, when the Rangers tacked on five more runs, followed by four in the fourth and six more in the fifth inning.
Marleigh Mancini and
Aubrey Massing led the way for Northwest, recording three base hits each. Mancini finished with the game's only triple, while Massing was one of four to record a double. Additionally,
Emma Jennings launched a home run.
Sommer Tyes (1-0) went all five innings on the mound, recording a complete game with eight strikeouts against a walk, an earned run and a base hit.
Next up for the Rangers is a quick turnaround to Southwest Mississippi, scheduled for Wednesday at 2/4 P.M. The games were initially scheduled to be played last weekend, but were rescheduled due to the severe weather outbreak across the Mid-South.

Game 1 - #8 Northwest 21, Coahoma 0 (4 inn.)
A 10-run effort in the top of the first inning set the tone for a 21-0 thrashing in favor of Northwest.
Ellie Fryar got things started off right in the leadoff slot, reaching base on a single and then stealing two bases. The sophomore from Dumas would then score on an error in
Carly Dunigan's at-bat, and the hits kept coming after that.
Addison Owen followed with a two-run single to center and Calarco smashed an RBI-single to the same spot, giving the Rangers an early 5-0 advantage.
Madison Weeks kept the momentum going with a two-run double to left field and Fryar added another run on a single. Dunigan then smashed a home run to center, giving Northwest the 10-0 lead.
After Brown retired the Lady Tigers in order in the bottom of the first, the Rangers picked up right where they left off in the second inning. With the bases loaded and two outs on the board, an error allowed
Thenya Kennedy to reach base, scoring Owen and
Emma Jennings, extending the score to 12-0.
Coahoma got its lone base hit off the bat of Jadyn Huddleston in the bottom of the second, but nothing more. Northwest then added seven more in the top of the third, highlighted by a single from
Lindsey Gillis and a triple to right field off the bat of Owen. Mancini's two-run double and a triple from Massing further helped the Rangers' cause, as NWCC pushed its advantage to 19-0.
Kyle Frost brought in the 20th run of the game on a single past the shortstop and after Calarco reached on a triple,
Jenn Smith lofted a single to right field. Meanwhile the combination of Brown and Boswood in the circle kept the Lady Tigers off the board, sealing the four-inning victory.
Aside from Dunigan's home run, Calarco, Massing and Owen all recorded triples. Fryar, Mancini, Weeks and
Cadence Rolison all provided doubles in the winning effort, while Fryar, Kennedy, Owen and Rolison were each credited with stolen bases.
Kalyce Mitchell was handed the loss for Coahoma, striking out two batters against a pair of walks and 13 earned runs given up in three complete frames. Huddleston pitched the final inning for the Lady Tigers, allowing two earned runs and a walk.
Game 2 - #8 Northwest 17, Coahoma 1 (5 inn.)
Coahoma spoiled the shutout in the bottom of the fourth inning, but nothing else deterred Northwest in 17-1 five-inning win.
Mancini and
Lulu Franks brought in a pair of runs on back-to-back singles in the top of the first and
Kaylee Reed started off the second inning with a single past the shortstop, pushing the Rangers' lead to 3-0.
An inside-the-park homer from Jennings cleared the bases after that and Mancini's RBI-triple gave Northwest a 7-0 lead going to the fourth inning.
A combined 10 runs highlighted the Rangers' efforts in the fourth and fifth innings, despite the Lady Tigers scoring in the home half of the fourth inning. However, Tyes dished out eight strikeouts in five complete frames, capturing her first win of the season in the circle.
Northwest finished with 16 base hits in the win, with Jennings' home run and Mancini's triple being the biggest highlights. Fryar, Massing, Owen and Reed also finished with a double each.
For Coahoma, Marika Bonner went 2-for-2 at the plate and Mitchell hit for a double, accounting for three of the Lady Tigers' base hits. Mitchell and Huddleston once again combined in the circle, with Mitchell taking the loss once again, issuing three walks and 11 earned runs in 4.1 frames.
