Northwest Tennis Splits with Meridian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SENATOBIA - Northwest freshman Holden Cooke scored a huge singles win to help lift the Rangers to a 6-3 victory against 19th-ranked Meridian on Wednesday afternoon.

Cooke, the freshman from Cleveland, battled Meridian's Badlwim Escobar Cifuentes on No. 3 singles, earning a 6-4, 6-1 win. Northwest also scored singles wins on courts four through six, while picking up two doubles victories as well.

Meanwhile, the 21st-ranked Northwest Lady Rangers fell by a close 5-4 decision against a Meridian team also ranked 19th in women's competition.

Sophomore Mattie Sanders battled to earn a three-set victory at No. 4 singles, and the Lady Rangers also picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. However, Meridian managed to take two of the three doubles matches, with the lone exception being an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles for Macarena Arisio and Claudia Lopez Chaparro.

With the split, Northwest improved to 8-2 overall and 5-1 inside the MACCC. The Lady Rangers dropped to 7-3 on the season and 4-2 in conference play.

Northwest will have a rapid turnaround, traveling to East Central on Thursday, March 6. The Lady Warriors enter the match ranked 23rd, while the East Central men's team holds a No. 24 national ranking.
