Northwest Takes Down Nationally-Ranked Opponents

VICKSBURG - Sophomore pitcher Abby Rogers had two lockdown relief efforts, as Northwest capped off the Hinds JUCO Classic with a 6-5 win against No. 12 LSU-Eunice and a 6-2 victory against 21st-ranked Parkland College.

Rogers, a native of Brandon, issued a combined eight strikeouts with no walks allowed and only one unearned run surrendered. She was credited with the win against LSU-Eunice and a save against Parkland, while Morgen Brewton improved to 6-0 in the finale.

Meanwhile, the Rangers combined for 20 base hits, highlighted by Carleigh Calarco's 4-for-6 effort and Ellie Fryar's 4-for-7 performance. Addison Owen also finished 3-for-6 at the plate.

With the sweep, Northwest moved to 11-1 overall and 4-0 against nationally-ranked opponents. The Rangers will return home on Thursday, February 27 against Shawnee for a 12/2 P.M. doubleheader.

Game 1 - Northwest 6, #12 LSU-Eunice 5

LSU-Eunice built a 4-0 lead against Northwest, but the Rangers rallied back for a two-run fourth inning and a three-run surge in the fifth to earn a 6-5 victory against the Lady Bengals.

Northwest surrendered a pair of runs in the first inning and two more in the third, but Fryar's triple set up an RBI-grounder from Carly Dunigan to get the Rangers on the board. In the fourth inning, a pair of RBI base hits from Fryar and Thenya Kennedy brought Northwest back within a run.

In the fifth, home runs from Calarco and Sommer Tyes gave Northwest a 6-4 lead. LSU-Eunice got a two-out single in the sixth to add a run, but Rogers issued a strikeout to end the threat.

Northwest finished the game with 10 base hits, led by Calarco's 3-for-3 effort. Fryar and Tyes each finished with two base hits to further bolster the Rangers' offense.

Rogers struck out four batters with no walks and no earned runs allowed in 4.1 innings pitched. Brewton started the contest and pitched 2.2 innings with two strikeouts against a walk and four earned runs allowed.

Game 2 - Northwest 6, #21 Parkland College 2

Northwest scored six runs over the first two innings, earning a 6-2 victory against 21st-ranked Parkland College.

A leadoff error in the first paved the way for back-to-back base hits from Fryar and Dunigan. With a 1-0 lead and two outs, Fryar scored from third on a passed ball, moving the Rangers' lead to 2-0.

After Brewton retired the Lady Cobras in order in the top of the second, Jenn Smith's RBI base hit brought in another run. Fryar followed with a triple and a sacrifice fly from Dunigan gave Northwest a 6-0 advantage.

Parkland scored two runs in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Cobras got nothing after that, as Rogers once again came in to shut down things in relief.

Brewton struck out seven batters in five complete frames, while Rogers issued four strikeouts in three complete innings. Fryar and Owen accounted for two base hits apiece, as the Rangers finished with 10 base hits.

Parkland finished with five base hits in the loss, led by two apiece from Nicole Sinks. Claire Black was handed the loss for the Lady Cobras, striking out two batters and allowing six unearned runs in 1.1 frames.
