Volleyball finishes off Southwest Mississippi in sweep at home

Woods shines on offense and defense for Rangers

Box Score

SENATOBIA - It was another team effort for the Northwest Community College volleyball team (26-4, 10-2) on Wednesday night on the way to a clean sweep of the Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears (4-17, 2-9), getting some payback for a five-set match earlier this season and picking up their sixth win in a row.

"It was good to see lots of people get some minutes tonight and playing time, and for us to take care of it in three as opposed to the five when we were on the road. I thought we did really well," Head Coach Allison Burchyett said.

Chloe Rodgriguez added that finishing the win in three sets was big coming off a long week and a half of matches.

"I think it's definitely something we needed," the freshman from Jonesboro, Arkansas said. "We had a very hard week last week with nine games from Monday to Monday, and it's midterm week, so I feel like we needed that win and it was a positive thing that we went three sets."

The match started out with both sides trading salvos leading to five ties in the first ten points, but Northwest took the lead a 6-5 and reeled off five straight points to gain the first separation of the match.

Later, at 12-7, another long run was led on the serving efforts of Ariana Woods and three straight aces to close a six-point run had Northwest in complete control 17-7. While the Bears did gain some footing, it didn't last as a third salvo that lasted six straight points from Jania Rose closed the set with an ace from the Walls native gave the Rangers the 25-11 win.

Northwest continued that strong play into the second set and slowly built the lead to 10-5. A timeout by the Bears allowed them to cut the gap to 14-12 but an unconventional play which resulted in a Hassie Clare Thurman kill threw off the rhythm of Southwest and led to an 11-2 run to close out the second set in convincing fashion, 25-14.

Up 2-0, the Rangers were able to work on some different rotations which lead to a much tighter set in the early going. Northwest still was able to build the lead to 10-5 but couldn't put their foot on the gas to really gain separation.

Southwest went on a run of their own to even the match at 18-all and it looked like they might be able to push the match to a fourth, but the Rangers closed out the set and match with a 7-3 push of their own for a 25-21 win and the home sweep.

Ten Rangers recorded at least one kill in the match paced by 12 kills from Adalyn Callahan. Aven Mathis had her second errorless game in the last four matches with seven kills and Ariana Woods also picked up eight more for her season total.

Woods also added three block assists and three aces on the way to contributing 12 total points to the Northwest effort.

Chloe Rodriguez led the Rangers in assists with 16 with Dallas White adding 12.

"With everyone getting in, I still feel like we do our job connecting with hitters as best we can or at least giving a ball for them to hit even though we're not practicing as much with all of the games," Rodriguez said, adding that the chemistry on the team is some of the best on any team she has played for.

Northwest will have a week to prepare for their next match when they head to Meridian Community College for a rematch with the Eagles. Northwest swept MCC the first time they played at Howard Coliseum.
