ELLISVILLE – A strong first half couldn't be repeated by the Northwest Mississippi Community College men's soccer team (4-10-2, 1-8) as they fell to a potent offense from #10 Jones College on Tuesday night in a 6-1 game that saw the Rangers overpowered in the second half.
The match started out with a quick offense from both sides as a goal from Matt Reed opened the scoring for the Bobcats in the fifth minute after a penalty kick was awarded on a foul in the 18-yard box from Alkali Jobe, but it was answered quickly after Ariel Vallejo took a pass from Francisco Ambrioso and dribbled his way through traffic on the way to a one-one-one with the goalie to tie the match in the ninth minute at one all.
The rest of the first half settled into a defensive back and forth with only two more total shots being managed by both sides. This despite the Rangers seeing six corner kicks from Jones College in the first half.
In the second, it was a different story as Jones came out firing early and often. Lucas Ekfeldt got the Bobcats the lead in the 48th minute and just 30 seconds later a second goal from Reed set the tone for the final 45 minutes as in the blink of an eye it was 3-1.
Northwest did settle the attack down but another unfortunate pair of yellow cards to Chase Michael and Leo Frank, one for a foul and one for arguing, gave a penalty kick to the Bobcats which was finished by Reed for his third of the game and a 4-1 lead in the 64th minute.
It was followed by one more goal by Reed in the 68th minute when he broke free for a one-on-one with Little and one more goal sealed the scoring in the 80th minute when Ekfeldt picked up his second of the match to make it 6-1.
Northwest was never really able to get much going, only getting two total shots in the game and only their lone goal of the match was put on the frame. They also only picked up two corner kicks and while Jacob Little made five saves in the second half, he was under constant duress with 14 shots from the Bobcats in the half.
The loss drops the Rangers to 1-8 in conference play with only two matches remaining. They will return home for sophomore night on Friday evening at 7:00 pm against Southwest Mississippi Community College before closing the year out on the road at Copiah-Lincoln Community College on October 28th.
