TYLER, Texas - Although weather set back most of Sunday's schedule at the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships, Northwest did finish the day on a high note, with the duo of
Mattie Sanders and
Grace Ann Wade earning a victory in consolation doubles.
Sanders and Wade rebounded from their main draw loss on Saturday, earning an 8-1 victory against Allyson English and Maya Morris of Moraine Valley Community College in the consolation bracket of flight two. The duo will advance to compete against Azelia Lara and Katy Lawler of Paradise Valley Community College, scheduled for Monday at 2 P.M.
Three student-athletes in the main draw of singles competition fell on Saturday.
Holly Stewart dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Catherine Goldman of Hillsborough Community College in flight one, while Sanders fell 6-1, 6-0 to Candy Wai (Tyler Junior College) in flight two. Meanwhile, Wade fell in flight four to Molly Bennett (Jones College) by a 6-0, 6-0 margin.
In flight three consolation, freshman
Kendall Moody fell 8-6 to English, while
Allie Rawles and
Raney Peacock had byes in flight five and flight six of consolation play.
In doubles, the duo of Moody and Rawles dropped an 8-1 loss to Serena Alvarado and Maeva Chambon (USC-Sumter) in flight one doubles consolation. Meanwhile, Peacock and Stewart dropped a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 decision to Copiah-Lincoln's Adyson Parks and Ann-Clark Van in flight three doubles consolation.
Four matches will be played on Monday, starting with singles consolation matches at 11 A.M. Rawles will face Riley Dunn of Sauk Valley Community College in flight five, while Peacock is slated to face Jessica Buker of Mercer County Community College in flight six.
Doubles consolation matches are scheduled for 2 P.M. on Monday, with Sanders and Wade facing Lara and Lawler in flight two, while Peacock and Stewart will compete in flight three against Kirsten Nielson and Taylor Wasson of Mesa Community College.
