Griffin, Selby Sign with Four-Year Programs

Marks six Northwest baseball players bound for four-year schools

SENATOBIA - Roughly two weeks after seeing three Northwest baseball players sign to four-year institutions, another pair of Rangers are heading to the next level as well.

Infielder/catcher Eli Selby and infielder Dawson Griffin signed their official paperwork on Tuesday afternoon, with Selby bound for Rhodes College and Griffin to Freed-Hardeman University. The duo now marks a total of six Northwest baseball players from the 2023 squad to sign with a four-year program, joining pitchers Brayden Sanders (Memphis), Brooks Rice (Samford), Logan Eldridge (Delta State) and C.J. Lofton (Mississippi College).

"I'm super excited that these two guys get to continue their education and baseball careers at the next level," Northwest coach Mark Carson said. "Both Dawson and Eli are outstanding guys in the classroom and their futures are so bright. They're going to have a great time playing baseball for those schools and they will do extremely well representing both Freed-Hardeman and Rhodes."

Selby, a Walls native and Niagara University transfer, filled both a first base and catching role for the Rangers this season, rotating between the two positions throughout the conference doubleheader schedule. The former Magnolia Heights product batted .279 with six doubles, five home runs and 35 RBIs, while also finishing tied for ninth in career fielding percentage (.984) with Brandon Kizer (1999-2000).

One of Selby's best performances at the plate came on February 11 against Motlow State, where he went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in. Behind the plate, he caught eight runners stealing this season, including two in a road win at Jackson State (Tenn.) on February 15. Selby also recorded a season-best 14 putouts in a March 7 home win against East Mississippi.

Griffin spent two seasons as the Rangers' everyday second baseman, playing in a total of 90 games. The Batesville native and South Panola alumnus posted an eye-opening turnaround at the plate, raising his season batting average from .180 as a freshman to .333 as a sophomore, hitting four doubles, a triple and 11 runs batted in this season.

One of his best performances at the plate this season came on April 4 against Coahoma, where he went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, helping the Rangers to a win and giving Carson his 500th career coaching victory. In the field, Griffin posted a career fielding percentage of .922 with 100 career putouts and 135 assists.

Since taking over as the Northwest head coach in 2006, Carson has produced 139 four-year players, including 55 to Division I programs.
