SENATOBIA - Although East Central certainly put Northwest to the test on Friday afternoon, the top-ranked Lady Rangers used two early goals to distance themselves from the competition, as the home team earned the 3-0 shutout win.
Northwest improved to 15-0 on the season, matching the Lady Rangers' program-best win total from the previous two seasons. The win also helped Northwest jump to 8-0 in conference play, while East Central dropped to 4-7-1 overall and 3-5 within the MACCC.
Caroline Chandler and
Mari Julia Delgado helped provide the two early goals within the first 10 minutes of the match, helping the Lady Rangers gain some early separation. However, East Central pushed back the rest of the way, keeping the Northwest offense at bay.
Despite the added pressure from the Lady Warriors in the second half, Northwest did manage to tack on an additional goal in the 59th minute, as
Brandy Hernandez netted her sixth score of the season.Â
The win also marked the Lady Rangers' 14th shutout of the season, a new program record. Freshman goalkeeper
Anna Kathryn Harrell also improved to 13-0 between the posts, becoming the new single-season leader in wins for a goalkeeper. The Tupelo native and three-time MACCC Goalkeeper of the Week surpassed the previous single season record of 12 wins, set by
Addy McCann just last season.
Additionally, Harrell also recorded her 12th shutout of the season, also good for a new single season record. Ashley Nelson held the previous record of 11 shutouts, set during the 2014 season.
Next up for Northwest is a road contest to No. 17 Copiah-Lincoln on Tuesday, October 17. The Lady Wolves (7-5-1, 4-3-1 MACCC) are coming off Friday's 4-0 loss to No. 3 Holmes.
