SENATOBIA - Although it took a little while for Northwest to get going, the 12th-ranked Lady Rangers earned a solid 4-1 victory against previously-ranked Mineral Area College on Saturday.
Northwest surrendered its first goal of the season late in the match, as the Lady Cardinals' Kayleigh Slinkard got one past
Addy McCann in the 86th minute. However, the Lady Rangers have still outscored their opponents 33-1 through the first four matches of the season.
Scoreless through the first 25 minutes of the first half, Northwest freshman
Jadyn Duran finally broke the ice with a goal in the 28th minute, thanks to an assist from
Jennifer Enriquez. Just seconds later, Duran struck again off a feed from
Caroline King, quickly giving the Lady Rangers a 2-0 advantage.
In the 32nd minute, freshman
Avery Hooker connected with sophomore
Eliza Olive on another Northwest goal, helping the Lady Rangers take a 3-0 halftime lead.
Melinda Hernandez provided the final goal for Northwest in the 60th minute, thanks to Enriquez' second assist of the match.
Northwest outshot Mineral Area College 28-14, but the shots on-goal margin was much closer, with the Lady Rangers holding a 13-10 edge. Duran and Enriquez combined for 16 total shots, with five of Duran's coming on-goal.
McCann played the full 90 minutes for the first time all season, improving her season record to 3-0-0 with nine saves.Â
Northwest was whistled for 16 fouls, opposed to seven by Mineral Area College. The Lady Rangers also totaled nine corner kicks, compared to six from MAC.
Northwest will have a long break before its next match, opening up conference competition at No. 6 Jones College on Friday, September 16.Â
