ELLISVILLE - A gritty, hard-fought battle between No. 10 Northwest and fifth-ranked Jones College ultimately resulted in a close 1-0 loss for the Lady Rangers on Friday afternoon.
Northwest dropped to 4-1 on the season and 0-1 in MACCC play, while the Lady Bobcats moved to 4-0 and opened up conference play at 1-0.Â
While the first half remained scoreless, it was the Lady Rangers that had the momentum through the first 45 minutes. By halftime, Northwest led 6-4 in total shots, but held a 4-0 advantage in shots on-goal.
Jones drastically turned up the heat in the second half however, as the Lady Bobcats began to find some looks at the goal. Though the Lady Rangers' defense put up a strong fight, the home team finally got one into the back of the net, as Izzie Scott's deflection off the crossbar found the waiting foot of Carson Turner in the 73rd minute.
In the final stages of the match, Northwest had a couple chances to even the score with the help of a couple corner kicks. However, the Lady Rangers were denied on every shot, sealing the win for Jones.
Despite the loss, the match was a stark contrast to last season's 6-0 MACCC Semifinal loss to the Lady Bobcats, demonstrating the continued growth of the Northwest program.
Jones finished the match with a 17-10 margin in total shots, with 13 coming in the second half. The shots on-goal were nearly even, with Northwest finishing with the slight 7-6 advantage. Both teams also finished near even in corner kicks and fouls.
Jadyn Duran took three shots to lead the Lady Rangers and all three were on target.
Caroline King also took two shots with both coming on-goal.
Addy McCann collected five saves in a full 90 minutes of action, while Jones' goalkeeper Makenna Yarrow picked up the victory with seven saves.
Three cautions were handed out in the match, all coming in the second half.
Kaley Harden and
Dani Rodriguez were hit in the 78th minute, while Riley Davis picked up one for Jones in the 53rd minute.
Next up for Northwest is a trip to Decatur to face 13th-ranked East Central. The two teams split last season's series and the Lady Warriors enter the match with a 3-2 overall record, most recently dropping a 3-0 decision to No. 4 Holmes on Friday.
