JACKSON - Following a 4-0 run in last week's NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, Northwest outfielder
Laila Armstrong and pitcher
Gabby Dickerson have swept the MACCC Player of the Week honors.
Announced by the conference on Tuesday morning, it is the first time that either player have garnered weekly honors from the MACCC.
McKaylee Polk was the Rangers' only other player of the week selection, as the freshman earned the award on April 19 after guiding Northwest through a 3-1 week.
Armstrong earned Player of the Week following a quiet, but powerful stretch at the plate. The Olive Branch native batted .571 to lead all Northwest hitters, finishing with three doubles (including two in a 9-5 victory against Northeast) and batting in two runs.
Armstrong was also quick on the base-paths with four stolen bases, further separating herself as the program's single-season and career record-holders in stolen bases. For the season, the Tennessee State signee is batting .426, second only behind Polk's .434 batting average.
Dickerson collected her first Pitcher of the Week accolades going the distance in three games and posting a solid 3.1 innings of relief in a 6-3 win against Northeast. The Olive Branch native blanked LSU Eunice in a 2-0 victory on the opening day, posting eight strikeouts with no walks allowed, and responded with a nine-strikeout effort in a 9-5 win against Northeast.
Two days later, Dickerson came out of the bullpen with five strikeouts and no walks allowed in a 6-3 semifinal win against the Tigers. Finally, she shut down LSU Eunice in the title game, delivering four strikeouts after a 2-0 deficit, helping the Northwest bats pull back ahead for nine unanswered runs. On the season, Dickerson has 216 strikeouts, already good for second in career strikeouts at Northwest.
Northwest will await its seeding for the NJCAA Division II Championship tournament, which will run from May 24-28 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala. Seeding will be announced on Friday, May 20.
