Rangers Outlast Copiah-Lincoln in Double Overtime

Northwest to await MACCC Tournament seeding

WESSON - No other game in the MACCC was as thrilling as the Northwest men's matchup at Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday evening.

Northwest rallied back from a 13-point deficit to tie the game on a layup from James Richards III with 1.1 seconds left, forcing overtime and later double overtime, as the Rangers defeated the Wolves by a 99-92 final.

"Our guys played their hearts out tonight," Northwest coach Shane Oakley said, after the game. "We have had our ups and downs, but these guys have always stayed the course and I couldn't be more proud to be their coach."

With the win, Northwest closed out the regular season at 17-6 overall and 9-5 against conference competition. Copiah-Lincoln fell to 7-15 overall and 4-10 in the MACCC with the loss.

Northwest led 20-16 midway through the first half, but the Rangers found themselves down 37-33 at halftime. The struggles continued for Northwest during the first 10 minutes of the second half, as the Rangers trailed 62-49.

From there, Northwest outscored the Wolves 23-10 down the stretch and closed the gap to 72-70 with less than 10 seconds to go. The Rangers missed a pair of baskets, but maintained possession with a couple offensive rebounds, allowing Richards to tip-in the game-tying basket with 1.1 seconds left. Copiah-Lincoln would miss a game-winning attempt at the buzzer, forcing overtime.

Copiah-Lincoln got off to a hot start in overtime and led by as many as five late in the extra period, only for Northwest to rally back once more and force double overtime. Foul trouble soon got the best of the Wolves, as the Rangers outscored Copiah-Lincoln 16-9 in double overtime to earn the road victory.

Northwest shot 42 percent from the floor in the win and 36 percent from beyond the arc, while the Wolves also shot 42 percent overall and 22 percent from three-point range. The Rangers were outscored 56-32 in the paint and 35-26 in bench points, but made the plays when it counted, especially from three-point range.

Isaiah Gaines led all scorers with a 28-point, 17-rebound double-double, while also adding five blocks to his credit. Ethan Pickett also added 22 points of his own with six rebounds, followed by 15 off the bench from Jaylon Sanders. Sophomore Kavonte Tunstall also tallied 10 points and six rebounds, while Joseph Cooper totaled nine points and four assists.
