2021-22 [Sophomore]: Played and started in all 25 games last season with the Rangers, helping Northwest to the Region 23 Playoffs...led the team in scoring last season, averaging 15.1 points per game...also led the team in steals (33) and assists (120)...tied for fourth in total rebounds last season, earning 86...notched a career-high 26 points in a loss to Northeast on January 13...was credited with a season-high 10 assists against Mississippi Gulf Coast on February 7...competed in the All-American JUCO Showcase in Atlanta during the offseason.

2020-21 [Redshirt Freshman]: Played in 13 games at Pearl River CC, averaging 21.4 minutes per game...averaged 6.3 points, 4.5 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game...scored a season-high 18 points against East Central on January 25...dished out a season-high 10 assists against Copiah-Lincoln on March 4...invited to the All-American JUCO Showcase and the JucoReport.com Elite150 showcase.

2019-20 [Freshman]: Redshirted his freshman season at Pearl River CC.

High School: Played for coach Eric Rombaugh at Olive Branch...helped the Conquistadors to a 26-8 record and a runner-up finish in the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs as a senior...averaged 15 points, 8.2 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game during his final varsity season...selected to play in the 2018 Mississippi Sports Medicine North/South All-Star game...named to the Clarion-Ledger’s Dandy Dozen for the 2018-19 season...2019 Clarion-Ledger All-State third team selection...chosen to the 2019 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions All-Tournament team and invited to the Jim Couch National Training Showcase...received recruiting interest from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Murray State, UNLV, Tulane, LaSalle, Western Kentucky and Jackson State.

Personal: Son of Rodney and Leslie Newsom...has seven siblings: Jasmine, Kihya, Jamaal, Aspen, Kejuan, Tasha and Shayla Cooper...father, Rodney, played basketball at Memphis State/University of Memphis from 1992-96...enjoys playing chess, reading and studying history in his free time...college major is sports medicine...nickname is “Joe”...born October 16, 1999.
