JACKSON - Northwest freshman forward
Isaiah Gaines played a significant role in the Rangers' upset of No. 10 Jones College last Thursday. For his efforts, the Pensacola native was named MACCC Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Gaines tallied a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds in an 87-83 victory against the Bobcats, helping Northwest to its first regular season win against a ranked opponent since February 8, 2018. Gaines also added five blocks and five steals in the win, boosting the Rangers to their ninth win of the season.
Prior to his arrival at Northwest, Gaines lettered for Pensacola High School, where he helped the Tigers to a 20-3 record, a District 1-4A championship and the region semifinals of the FHSAA Class 4A playoffs as a senior. He won numerous accolades, including Florida Panhandle Player of the Year, MVP honors at the Pensacola Sports All-Star game and was chosen to participate in the HBCU Elite 100 and JucoReport.com Elite150 showcase camps.
Gaines is currently the Rangers' second-leading scorer, averaging 14.1 points per game, but leads the team in both average rebounds (8.4) and blocks per game (1.8). His scoring average trails only
Joseph Cooper, who owns an average of 16.8 points per game.
Northwest (10-2, 3-1 MACCC) will resume competition on Thursday against No. 24 Northeast. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 P.M. from Howard Coliseum, with a live broadcast available on Ranger TV (nwccrangers.com/watch) and Facebook Live.
