SENATOBIA - Despite a pair of goals from
Peyton Coker and Jesus Villegas, Northwest was unable to match Copiah-Lincoln on Wednesday afternoon, as the Rangers fell 4-2.
Copiah-Lincoln turned a close 1-0 halftime lead into a three-goal scoring burst in the second half, even as the Rangers tried to fight back into the match. Northwest slid to 0-2 on the season with the loss, while the Wolves started out at 1-0 overall.
Hardy Lewis broke the ice for the Wolves in the 19th minute, scoring the match's first goal off a Will Ballenger assist. Zach Sorey wasted no time getting his team going in the second half as well, as Copiah-Lincoln jumped out to the early 2-0 lead.
After Sorey added another Co-Lin goal in the 57th minute, Rhone finally connected with Villegas to put Northwest on the board in the 59th minute.
Roughly six minutes later, the Wolves got an added boost from Hardy Lewis' goal from Sorey in the 65th minute, as Copiah-Lincoln bumped its lead to 4-1.
Dereck Gomez would then connect with former MACCC All-Conference selection
Peyton Coker for a header goal in the 80th minute. However, the damage had already been done, as the Wolves held on for the 4-2 win.
Copiah-Lincoln outshot Northwest 22-20 and 18-9 in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper
Xzavier Paylor logged 14 saves for the Rangers, while Ben Parkinson netted six saves.
