RIDGELAND - After leading 2-1 early in the first half, 13th-ranked Northwest saw No. 6 Holmes strike back to tie a minute later, propelling the Lady Bulldogs to an offensive onslaught in a 9-3 Lady Ranger loss on Friday afternoon.
Northwest saw its unbeaten streak come to an end, falling to 8-1 on the season and 3-1 in MACCC North Division competition. Meanwhile, Holmes improved to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 among division competition.
For the Lady Rangers, the match started on a normal note as
MJ Loeffel scored just eight minutes in. Five minutes later, Holmes evened the score with a goal from Callie McKinney, set up by Olivia Deslatte's assist.
In the 18th minute, Northwest would take the lead for the final time, as
Ally Bailey stole a goal kick away from a Holmes defender, tapping in a short score for the Lady Rangers. A minute later, McKinney evened the score at 2-2 for the Lady Bulldogs.
From there, Holmes grabbed the momentum and never looked back, as a pair of goals from Katelin Johnson and Jaelyn Hanson ended the first half with a 4-2 Northwest deficit.
Holmes picked up right where it left off, as Hanson added another goal less than a minute into the second half. Mia Mauro then made it a 6-2 advantage with her goal at the 51st minute.
One of the few second half highlights for Northwest came in the 57th minute, when Enriquez got the Lady Rangers back on the board with a successful penalty kick. However, the spark was brief for the Lady Rangers, as Holmes added three more goals, including two from Darian Blackburn late in the match.
Holmes led the overall shot column 19-17, but finished with a 16-10 gap in shots on goal.Â
Northwest will look to get back in the win column next week, stepping out of division play for a pair of matches against Southwest Tennessee and Copiah-Lincoln.
