Volleyball Swept at Wildcat Classic

MOBILE, Ala. - Northwest returned from its first volleyball road trip empty-handed over the weekend, as the Lady Rangers were swept in the Bishop State Wildcat Classic by the hosts on Friday night and by Pearl River and Snead State in a pair of Saturday morning matches.

Despite the 0-3 weekend, the Lady Rangers did show some progress by taking a crucial third set from Bishop State and an energizing first set victory from Snead State in the weekend's final match.

Sophomore Kapria Manning earned a nod to the All-Wildcat Classic Tournament team following Saturday's 3-1 loss to Snead State. Manning went for a combined 46 kills, 16 digs and three total digs.

Northwest will embark on another road trip on Wednesday, September 1, traveling to Millsaps College for a 5 P.M. matchup.

Bishop State 3, Northwest 1
(Set scores: 15-25, 20-25, 25-22, 19-25)

Northwest shook off a slow start in the opening set and rallied back to put Bishop State on its toes in the second set. Trailing the match 2-0, the Lady Rangers staved off elimination with a 25-22 third set victory, but the Lady Wildcats ultimately edged the Lady Rangers in the fourth set to earn the match victory.

Manning led the Lady Rangers with 17 kills on the evening, while Kamryn Conner and Julissa Soto tallied 15 and 11 digs, respectively. Sydney Sides also led the team in blocks, earning four.

Additionally, Alexia Davis came away with a season-high 18 assists.

Bishop State was led in kills by the one-two punch of Zoe Van Rijn (14) and Ma'Kayla Jones (13), while three players earned 10 or more digs.

Pearl River 3, Northwest 0
(Set scores: 20-25, 19-25, 14-25)

Despite taking Pearl River to a pair of thrilling sets, the Lady Rangers were unable to turn the tide in the third set, as the Lady Wildcats notched their second victory of the season against Northwest on Saturday morning.

Every player on the roster saw action for Northwest, led by 13 kills from Manning and 11 assists from Lia Ramos. Conner and Soto combined for 21 digs, while Davis provided eight assists.

Soto led the team in aces, finishing with three, just ahead of freshman Brinley Steed, who earned two.

Snead State 3, Northwest 1
(Set scores: 25-21, 17-25, 20-25, 11-25)

Northwest came out with all the energy in the opening set and held off a rally from Snead State, taking the first set and a 1-0 match lead. However, the Lady Parsons quickly regrouped and took the next two sets, before pulling away for a convincing 25-11 clincher in the fourth set.

Manning totaled 16 kills and 10 digs, followed by Soto's eight kills and eight digs. Conner once again led the Lady Rangers in kills, totaling 16, along with four aces.

Davis totaled 16 assists, followed by eight from Ramos.
