JACKSON - Fresh off one of the most memorable seasons in program history, postseason recognition continues to roll in for the Northwest softball program, as the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference announced its all-conference honors on Monday morning.
Four Rangers earned All-MACCC recognition, marking the most selections since the 2017 season.
Saige Koczka and
Maddie Brower were both chosen as first team selections, while
MyCala Helms and
Kaitlyn Bednarek earned Honorable Mention accolades.
As one of the most dynamic offensive players in the conference, Koczka was a recurring nightmare for opposing pitchers, as she captured several career records in batting average (.489), doubles (20), home runs (14), RBIs (59), total bases (131) and slugging percentage (.985). Her 48 runs scored are also good for second most in a single season, while her .520 on-base percentage is the highest single-season mark since Ashley White's .540 percentage in 2007.
For her career (which also counts from the shortened 2020 campaign), Koczka now owns a program-record .486 batting average and is tied for third all-time with Angela Carden (2009-10) in career doubles (22). The Southaven native also has 67 RBIs, which is the most by a single player since Lauren Riley's 68 RBIs from 2012-13.
Additionally, Koczka was part of a strong outfield core, rotating between left and right field. She totaled 50 putouts and a .934 fielding percentage, while also stepping into the circle for 51.1 innings pitched, 31 strikeouts and a 5-4 record.
A freshman from Lewisburg, Brower wasted no time earning her starting shortstop role in the Rangers' lineup. Like her teammate Koczka, Brower also was a handful at the plate, finishing her debut season with a .427 batting average, 11 doubles and nine home runs, good for second most in both a single season or career.
Brower's 49 runs scored already marks a new program record, beating out Koczka by one, and her 41 RBIs and .718 slugging percentage are both good enough for second in program history.Â
After starting the season in the infield, Helms made the move behind the plate in conference play, finishing her Northwest career with a .961 fielding percentage and four runners caught stealing. The Winona native and Delta State signee also got it done at the plate, compiling a .409 batting average, trailing only Brower and Koczka.Â
Helms also finished with five doubles, two home runs and 34 RBIs, but it was her five triples that tied a single-season record and her six career triples put her all alone at the top of the record books. She also recorded the team's 400th hit with a single in the Rangers' Region 23 Tournament loss against Mississippi Gulf Coast, marking the first 400-hit season in program history.
A native of Southaven, Bednarek held down the starting role at second base all season long and was responsible for 49 putouts, Her .357 batting average ranked sixth among everyday starters in the Rangers' batting order, but her seven home runs now rank third in the career record books and her 37 RBIs put her tied for fourth in a single-season.
Bednarek also totaled a .659 slugging percentage for the season, good for fourth in a single season, and her 13 doubles rank placed her tied for fifth in the single-season records with Ashley White (2007).
Together, the four players above and a solid supporting cast helped coach
Chelsea Bramlett to a 20-18 overall record and the program's first playoff appearance since 2017. The Rangers defeated Northeast in the MACCC Tournament to qualify for the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament for the first time since 2012, and a 12-6 victory against 15th-ranked LSU Eunice went down in the record books as the program's first Region 23 Tournament victory.
