Box Score 2 MOORHEAD - Behind a combined 34 hits, Northwest returned to action for the first time in the month of April, earning a pair of 21-10 and 14-0 victories at Mississippi Delta on Tuesday afternoon.
Caylee Comer's two-run homer highlighted a 19-hit effort in the opener, while
Kaitlyn Bednarek's three doubles helped lift the Lady Rangers in Game 2.
Saige Koczka (5-4) got the win in the circle for Northwest and
Kaylei Peterson (7-5) struck out eight batters in the nightcap for a new career-high strikeout total.
With the sweep, Northwest improved to 14-10 overall and 11-9 on the season. The Lady Rangers will travel to East Central on Saturday, April 10 for a 2/4 P.M. twinbill.
Game 1 - Northwest 21, Mississippi Delta 10 (6 inn.)
Northwest scored three runs to open the first inning and withstood a seven-run rally from the Lady Trojans in the third inning, as the Lady Rangers took the opening game from Mississippi Delta.
After Mississippi Delta used the bottom of the third inning to tie the contest at 8-8, Northwest responded with eight runs in the top of the fourth and five more in the sixth.
Northwest smashed 19 hits and 20 RBIs, led by Comer's 4-for-5 effort at the plate. Koczka,
Maddie Brower and
Molly Harris came away with three hits apiece and a combined 11 RBIs.
Koczka struck out three batters across 3.1 innings of work, while
Meagan Allen made her much-anticipated debut with five strikeouts and no earned runs allowed in 2.2 innings of relief.
Game 2 - Northwest 14, Mississippi Delta 0 (5 inn.)
Peterson's career-best eight strikeouts kept the Lady Trojans off the board, as Northwest also powered out 15 hits in a shutout victory in Game 2.
Northwest wasted little time getting out ahead of Mississippi Delta, as the Lady Rangers scored four in the first and three more in the second to make it a quick 7-0 lead.
A solo run was added in the third and the Lady Rangers were held scoreless in the fourth, before expoloding for a six-run frame in the top of the fifth, sealing a pair of run-rule sweeps.
Bednarek went 3-for-4 on the day with five RBIs, as all three of her hits came as doubles. Harris,
Meredith Owen and
Laila Armstrong also finished with two hits apiece.
Mallory Hunt also pitched the final inning of the contest, issuing one strikeout.
