SENATOBIA - Tied at 54 apiece after three quarters, Mississippi Delta held Northwest scoreless over the first four minutes of the fourth period and outscored the Lady Rangers 25-12 in a 79-66 victory at Howard Coliseum on Monday evening.
With the loss, Northwest fell to 4-5 overall and suffered its third straight loss, the longest losing streak of the season. Meanwhile, the Lady Trojans improved to 2-7 and avenged their February 8 home loss to the Lady Rangers.
Antanisha Wade finished as Mississippi Delta's leading scorer and she quickly made her presence felt by scoring eight of the first 11 points for the Lady Trojans.
Trailing 11-7 midway through the opening quarter,
Morgan Hodum sank a three-pointer to spark a 10-0 run for the Lady Rangers. MDCC responded by tying the game at 17-17, but
I'Yana Ragin sank a three-point bucket to help Northwest to a 20-18 lead entering the second quarter.
Aside from a brief stretch midway through the second period, Northwest led for most of the second quarter and went into halftime with a 39-36 advantage, thanks to Ragin's jumper with 36 seconds remaining.
Both teams continued to trade blows throughout the third quarter, with neither squad taking a lead of more than three points. The opening minutes of the fourth quarter made the ultimate difference however, as Mississippi Delta went on an 8-0 run over a span of more than four minutes, pushing the Lady Rangers into an eight-point deficit.
Although Northwest made several efforts to cut the lead, the Lady Trojans seemed to hit the mark on every trip down the floor, eventually pushing the deficit to 10 points with 1:25 left and to its final margin of 13 just before the final buzzer.
Wade led all scorers with 30 points, followed by 16 points and eight rebounds from Bryneish Eason and 10 points from Rodericka Parker.
Despite the loss, Northwest saw four players finish in double figures, led by a pair of 19-point performances from Ragin and
Tierra Trotter. Hodum finished with 12 points and freshman
Kolten Blakeney fell just shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.
Northwest shot the ball well in the first half, going 49 percent from the floor and 46 percent from three-point land. Despite the icy fourth quarter, the Lady Rangers still finished 44 percent from field goal range and 37 percent from beyond the arc.
Led by Wade's stellar effort, Mississippi Delta shot 52 percent for the evening, including a 64 percent output in the fourth quarter. The Lady Trojans also finished 76 percent from the free throw line, compared to just 25 percent from the Lady Rangers.
Northwest will take a trip to second-place Coahoma on Thursday, March 11, in hopes of snapping the losing skid. Tipoff from the Pinnacle in Clarksdale is set for 6 P.M.
