Holmes Edges Northwest in Double Overtime Thriller

SENATOBIA - Despite five players reaching double figures for Northwest, Holmes came away from Howard Coliseum with a 90-84 double overtime win against the Rangers on Thursday night.

Forte Prater and Jaylon Sanders notched career-highs for Northwest, scoring 24 and 17 points, respectively. Tyler Lang also scored in double digits for the second consecutive game, earning 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Northwest fell to 4-6 on the season with the loss, which also marked the first double overtime contest involving the Rangers since a 101-97 loss against Northeast on January 12, 2015. Holmes improved to 7-2 with the victory.

Northwest seemingly stunned the Bulldogs in the first three minutes of the game, as DeAntoni Gordon scored the Rangers' first three baskets, including a fastbreak dunk from Prater. Lang then knocked down a three, to send Holmes into a timeout with a 9-2 deficit.

Holmes quickly responded out of the timeout and used a 12-0 run to take a 14-9 advantage on the Rangers with 14:50 remaining in the first half. Northwest quickly tied the contest at 14-14 on a jumper from Sanders and another three from Lang at the 12:42 mark of the first half.

Neither team led by more than four points over the remaining span of the first half, but the Bulldogs delivered the final blow before halftime, thanks to Asa Williams' jumper that made it a 32-29 lead with six seconds left.

Holmes took its largest lead of seven points during three different points of the second half, with its last margin coming at 47-40 with 10:30 left in regulation.

From there, Northwest slowly chipped away at the lead and with 6:45 remaining, Sanders' three-point basket inched the Rangers ahead 50-49.

Northwest pushed its lead to seven with a three-pointer from Prater at the 3:27 mark, only for Holmes to silence the Rangers with a 10-0 run that culminated in a Brandon Weatherspoon dunk with a minute left to go.

After Prater responded with another three to tie the contest at 63, Weatherspoon's missed three-pointer would allow the Rangers a chance for the game-winning shot with eight seconds left. Gordon's jumper however, fell short and forced overtime.

Trailing by six with 2:02 left in overtime, the Rangers were sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from Prater and Sanders, tying the contest at 70-70 with 1:18 to go.

Holmes twice muscled out to a three-point advantage and led 75-72 with 15 seconds left, only for Prater to sink a three at the buzzer to force a second overtime period.

Prater provided Northwest with its only lead of the second overtime, 78-77, with 4:03 remaining. However, after losing Carlos Curry and James Richards III to foul trouble, Northwest fell behind by six with 1:21 left to go and never recovered.

Gordon finished with 13 points for Northwest and Kavonte Tunstall provided 10 points with six rebounds.

Holmes was led by 30 points and five assists from Kaleb Higgins, while Weatherspoon provided 26 points. Olanrewaju Olayinka gave the Bulldogs their only double-double, posting a 15-point, 14-rebound effort.

Northwest shot 48 percent from three-point range, but Holmes did most of its damage in the paint and outscored the Rangers 34-14.

Next up for the Rangers is a road tilt at Mississippi Delta on Monday, March 8. Tipoff from Moorhead is slated for 6 P.M.
