MOORHEAD - For the second game in a row, Northwest freshman
Jaylon Sanders turned up the heat, topping his previous career-high of 17 points with a 23-point effort in the Rangers' 68-65 victory at Mississippi Delta on Monday.
Sanders, a product of Collierville (Tenn.) High School, scored 18 of his points from three-point range, as Northwest improved to 5-6 overall. Mississippi Delta fell to 3-8 with the loss.
Northwest held a 10-point lead against the Trojans midway through the first half, but Mississippi Delta stormed back to take a narrow 35-34 advantage at the break.
Both teams kept things tight throughout the second half, but the hot shooting from Sanders continued to give Northwest the upper hand. After being silenced in the first half,
Kavonte Tunstall broke out for eight points during the final 10 minutes of regulation to further aid the Rangers' efforts.
DeAntoni Gordon also chipped in 12 points in the winning effort, while
Tyler Lang finished in double figures for the third straight contest (10 pts.).
Jarius Sharp and Willie Eagins, Jr. paced Mississippi Delta with a pair of 17 and 16-point performances, respectively.
Northwest will resume action in a rare Wednesday evening contest against East Mississippi on March 10. The game is a make-up contest following the original postponement that took place on February 15, due to winter weather concerns.
