SENATOBIA - A low-scoring first half gave way to a strong second half effort from Coahoma, as the Lady Tigers outscored Northwest 40-20 over the final two quarters to take a 59-45 win against the Lady Rangers on Monday night.
Northwest fell to 4-3 on the season and dropped to fourth place in the MACCC North Division. Coahoma improved to 6-2 overall and maintained its second place status with the win.
A pair of layups from Braylin Tate and Mary Wilkins gave Coahoma an early 4-0 lead. Although the Lady Rangers picked up nine points from
Morgan Hodum's sharp three-point shooting, Coahoma never surrendered the lead in the first quarter and entered the second with a 14-11 advantage.
Back-to-back baskets from
Kolten Blakeney helped Northwest gain a one-point lead to start the second quarter and a nearly six-minute scoring drought from Coahoma allowed the Lady Rangers to take a 21-14 lead midway through the quarter.
Coahoma pulled within two as the clock ticked under two minutes, but a three-point basket from
Ashton Stanley and a made free throw from
Sha'Kirria Everett helped cement a 25-19 halftime lead for the Lady Rangers.
I'Yana Ragin opened the second half with a three-pointer to stretch the Northwest lead to nine, but the celebration would be short-lived, as Coahoma went on a 10-0 run to regain a 29-28 advantage.
Northwest took its final lead of the contest at the 2:39 mark of the third, as
I'Yana Ragin sank a three-pointer just before a mini 6-0 Coahoma run closed out the quarter with the Lady Tigers on top, 37-35.
Coahoma rapidly pushed its lead to double digits as the Lady Rangers went nearly five minutes without a field goal. A layup from Everett helped end the drought and cut the deficit to nine with 3:47 to go, but the Lady Tigers would outscore Northwest 9-4 down the stretch to prevent any sort of rally.
Northwest shot 33 percent from the floor and 40 percent in the first half, but those numbers would turn bleak in the second half, as the Lady Rangers finished the contest with 29 percent shooting and 27 percent from beyond the arc.
Missed free throws also plagued the Lady Rangers, as Northwest finished 5-of-13 and 39 percent from the charity stripe.Â
Hodum led Northwest with 12 points, all coming from three-point range and all coming in the first half. Trotter totaled eight points, five rebounds and three assists, while Blakeney led the team in rebounds (9).
Coahoma rallied from a dismal first half to finish 37 percent from the floor and 72 percent in free throws. The Lady Tigers did not make a three-pointer in 15 attempts.
Jurnee McLaurin's 17 points led all scorers and Coahoma's Mary Wilkins accounted for the game's only double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds). Braylin Tate also tallied 14 points to round out the Lady Tigers' double-digit scoring.
Coahoma also edged Northwest in total rebounds (50-42) and outscored the Lady Rangers 26-10 in the paint.
Northwest will look to get back in the win column on Thursday, March 4 at Holmes, who currently lies at 4-4 on the season and fifth place in the MACCC North. Game time is scheduled for 6 P.M. in Goodman.
