SENATOBIA - Sophomore transfer
DeAntoni Gordon finished with a career-high 24 points for Northwest, punctuated by a game-winning three-pointer with 1.5 seconds left, as the Rangers rallied for a 69-67 victory against Coahoma on Monday evening.
Northwest evened its record to 2-2 on the season, while Coahoma dropped to 1-2 overall.
Coahoma started the contest with the hot hand, especially from Cortez McCarty, who scored 10 of the Tigers' first 13 points. The Rangers had no answer for the Tigers in the first half, eventually falling behind by double digits with Jacob Perez' three-pointer at the 12:52 mark.
Northwest trailed by as many as 16 with three minutes remaining in the first half before a 7-2 Ranger run trimmed the deficit to 11 points, 35-24, at halftime.
Two quick Coahoma fouls helped the Rangers start the second half at the free throw line, sparking a 15-3 run that would eventually give Northwest a 39-38 advantage off a layup from Gordon.
From there, the game remained back and forth the entire way with neither team leading by more than four points . The remaining 15 minutes of the second half would bring 13 lead changes and five ties, as Coahoma desperately tried to come away with a road upset.
Northwest trailed by four with two minutes to go, but the Rangers immediately responded with a jumper from
Forte Prater and a defensive stop, setting up a fast break dunk from Gordon off a feed from Carlos Currey, tying the contest at 63-63 with 1:10 left.
After Stephon Isom put the Tigers ahead with a jumper, Gordon responded on the other end of the floor with a layup and one to push the Rangers back ahead 66-65 with 20 seconds to go.
A pair of free throws from Calvin Paige put Coahoma back ahead, 67-66, with eight seconds to go. Those eight seconds proved to be just enough time for Gordon, who sank the game-winning three-pointer off a pass from Prater, as the Rangers survived.
Gordon's 24 points led all scorers and the Wichita State transfer also picked up five rebounds and two blocks. Curry finished with a team-high 11 rebounds, while
Kavonte Tunstall posted nine points and five boards.
Freshman
Jaylon Sanders also provided a spark off the bench, scoring eight of the team's 24 bench points.
Isom led Coahoma with 15 points, while McCarty finished with 11 points after scoring 10 points to open the contest.
Northwest improved its shooting percentage significantly in the second half, going from 31 percent to 67 percent from the floor, finishing the game with a 47 percent mark.
Both teams were nearly even in three-point shooting and rebounds, as the Rangers finished 33 percent from beyond the arc and out-rebounded Coahoma 45-43.
Northwest will now turn its sights to a road showdown at Holmes on Thursday, February 4 in Goodman. The Rangers are seeking their first road victory of the season after losses at East Mississippi and Northeast.
Tipoff from Goodman is slated for a 6 p.m. start on
