SENATOBIA - Joseph Cooper led Northwest with 23 points and
Zandon Haralson provided 13 points off the bench, as the Rangers earned a narrow 80-77 victory against ASU Mid-South on Monday evening.
T.J. Hannah and
Isaiah Gaines also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively, as Northwest improved to 6-1 on the season.
Both teams came out shooting hot from beyond the arc, scoring the first three baskets of the game on three-pointers. ASU Mid-South led for a majority of the first 10 minutes, but a fastbreak dunk from
Kareem Thompson gave the Rangers a 19-18 advantage and paved the way for an eight-point lead for Northwest.
Cooper's three-pointer with 4:44 left in the first half gave Northwest its first double-digit lead and the Rangers took a 13-point lead at halftime, 44-31.
After briefly swelling the lead to its largest margin of 15 early in the second half, Northwest succumbed to a 22-6 run from the Greyhounds, who took a 53-50 lead with 14 minutes to go in regulation.
ASU Mid-South never led by more than four throughout the second half, as the Rangers remained within striking distance. Gaines finally helped Northwest retake the lead on a layup with 4:09 to go and pushed the lead to five, 78-73, with 2:28 left.
After T.J. Stewart closed the gap to three points on a pair of made free throws, Cooper hit one of two free throws on the other end to keep the Rangers ahead. Gaines earned a block on the other end of the floor, keeping the Greyhounds off the board and sealing the win for Northwest.
Northwest shot 45 percent from the floor and 77 percent from the charity stripe. The Greyhounds shot 42 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Rangers 40-37.
ASU Mid-South outscored the Rangers 41-26 off the bench, led by 20 from Jeremiah Jones. Smith also provided the Greyhounds with 13 points, followed by 11 from Mekhai Washington and 10 from Jailen Anderson.
Northwest will host East Mississippi on Thursday, December 2 to open conference competition. The Rangers previously defeated the Lions by five points on November 8.
