Lady Rangers Outlast Mississippi Delta For Overtime Victory

MOORHEAD - Sophomore guard Tierra Trotter led Northwest with 22 points and nine rebounds, guiding the Lady Rangers to a 92-85 overtime win at Mississippi Delta on Thursday evening.

Northwest improved to 5-2 with the victory, which marked the first overtime win for the Lady Rangers since a 73-69 triumph against Coahoma on January 9, 2020. Meanwhile, the Lady Trojans fell to 3-4 on the season.

Both teams battled neck-and-neck from the opening tip until the final buzzer of regulation. Mississippi Delta led 27-23 at the end of the first period, but Northwest responded by outscoring the Lady Trojans 25-21 over the course of the second period, sending both teams deadlocked at 48 entering halftime.

Neither the Lady Rangers or Mississippi Delta could produce much offense throughout the third period, but the Lady Trojans ended the quarter with a narrow 61-60 advantage. Both teams traded baskets on each possession throughout the fourth, locked at a 72-72 tie with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.

With the contest all knotted up at 76 at the end of regulation, the Lady Rangers finally gained some breathing room in overtime, outscoring Mississippi Delta 16-9 down the stretch and securing a tight road victory.

Thursday's victory also marked the most points scored in a game during Troy Howell's head coaching tenure and the most for the Lady Rangers since January 8, 2019, when Northwest defeated Blue Mountain JV by a 103-37 final.

Northwest shot 39 percent from the floor, while the Lady Trojans shot 58 percent despite the loss. Mississippi Delta also finished 44 percent from beyond the arc and 75 percent from the charity stripe, while the Lady Rangers shot 23 percent from three-point range and 72 percent in free throws.

Both teams finished even with 34 rebounds, but one of the biggest differences came in the turnover column, where the Lady Trojans turned the ball over 35 times as Northwest only had 13 turnovers for the evening.

Trotter's 22-point output is the most for the Bryant, Ark. native this season and the highest since a 27-point performance in a Region 23 Tournament loss to Itawamba last season.

Freshman Maura Nunley finished with another solid effort, capturing 12 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Jamia Chambers totaled 11 points. Sophomore forward Kolten Blakeney nearly earned another double-double, netting 10 points and eight rebounds.

Rodericka Parker led Mississippi Delta with 26 points, while Makia Willis earned 24 points and eight rebounds. Andrea Manning also reached double figures, scoring 12 points with eight rebounds.

Next up for Northwest is a rare Saturday, November 20 matinee against reigning MACCC North Division champions Coahoma. The Lady Tigers are off to a roaring 5-0 start, including their most recent 72-61 victory against Itawamba on Thursday night.

Tipoff for Saturday's contest is set for 1 P.M. at Howard Coliseum. The matchup will feature a video-only telecast on Ranger TV (nwccrangers.com/watch) and Facebook Live.
