Northwest and Holmes Play to 2-2 Draw

SENATOBIA - In a battle between two nationally-ranked programs on Sophomore Day, No. 13 Northwest and fourth-ranked Holmes played to a 2-2 draw in Tuesday's regular season finale.

With the double overtime tie, Northwest concluded the regular season with a 14-2-1 overall record and a 5-2-1 MACCC North Division record. Holmes moved to 12-1-2 overall and 6-0-2 in division play.

Both teams were neck and neck from the opening whistle to the final seconds, remaining scoreless through the first 27 minutes. Holmes struck first and broke the silence in the 28th minute, as Katelin Johnson scored off a Madelyn Polk assist to give the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 halftime advantage.

Northwest answered back in the 61st minute, as Melinda Hernandez hit Jennifer Enriquez for the tying goal and the 11th score of the season for the Las Cruces, N.M. native. Enriquez later scored again in the 77th minute on a pass from Ally Bailey, boosting the Lady Rangers to a 2-1 lead.

Holmes aggressively took control over the final 10 minutes of regulation and with less than three minutes to go, a questionable call set up a penalty kick for Ravynne Wilson, who pushed it past Addy McCann to tie the match and force a pair of scoreless overtime periods.

Despite the call, the Lady Rangers had chances to seal a win throughout the match, missing a penalty kick in the first half and having a handful of shots fall short in the second half. Holmes got off just one shot in the first overtime, while Northwest outshot the Lady Bulldogs 5-3 in the second and final overtime period.

In just her second division start, McCann played the match of her young career, earning a season-high 11 saves. Avery Belden logged 65 minutes for Holmes, collecting nine saves, while Layken Stockstill finished with three saves in 45 minutes.

Northwest launched 22 shots for the match, including 13 on goal, while Holmes finished with 19 total shots and 14 on goal. A combined 39 fouls were called in the match, including a pair of cautions against Malaesha Liddell and Holmes' Kaci Craft.

With the regular season now in the rearview mirror, Northwest now turns its attention to the MACCC Quarterfinals against the No. 3 seed from the South Division. Kickoff time and opponent information remains to be determined, but the match will take place on Tuesday, November 2. More details on that playoff match will be released when official.
