JACKSON – Northwest sophomore Delta Claire Newman has earned the chance to continue her playing career at the four-year level after the Eupora native recently committed to Millsaps College.

Newman made an immediate impact in the Rangers' starting lineup as a freshman, posting a .349 batting average with 12 doubles, two home runs and 17 RBIs. Splitting time in the infield and in the circle, she compiled a .977 fielding percentage with 77 putouts in 86 chances.

When called upon to pitch, Newman made eight appearances with two starts and six strikeouts. Her best performance in the circle came as a freshman as she struck out three batters in three complete frames during a 9-4 victory against Southwest Tennessee on April 10, 2019.

Newman was poised for an even stronger season as a sophomore but her stats were limited with the 2020 season being cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Prior to arriving at Northwest, Newman turned heads at Eupora High School, batting .435 with four home runs and 57 RBIs as a senior. For her efforts in helping the Lady Eagles to a 17-3 overall record and the second round of the Class 2A playoffs, Newman earned Player of the Year honors from the Starkville Daily News and for Region 2-2A. She also compiled a 20-2 career pitching record with a 1.04 ERA and finished as a top 10 finalist for the Wendy's High School Heisman award.

Located in Jackson, Millsaps competes at the NCAA Division III level in the Southern Athletic Association. The Lady Majors started the 2020 season at 13-9 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
