CLARKSDALE – Three players finished in double figures for Northwest as the Rangers avenged an earlier loss to Coahoma with a 72-60 road win in Clarksdale on Monday night.
Northwest improved to 13-6 on the season and 5-3 in the division as the host Tigers dropped to 7-11 and 2-6 in MACJC North action.
Tomias Brand led the Rangers with 14 points, the most since scoring 24 in an early season win against Faith Prep. The Mobile, Ala. native and West Alabama transfer got his night started with an early jumper that sparked a quick 8-0 scoring burst for Northwest.
Kavonte Tunstall's three-pointer helped Northwest to an 11-5 lead with 14:49 left in the first half, but Coahoma responded with a 7-0 run to regain a 12-11 advantage.
After Tyler Berryhill's three-pointer put Coahoma ahead 16-14, Northwest would close the final 8:36 of the first half on a 17-4 scoring run to take a 31-20 lead into the locker room.
Northwest didn't miss a beat to open the second half, swelling its 11-point lead to a 16 point advantage with 16:32 remaining in regulation.
Coahoma had no interest in going away quietly however, embarking on a 9-0 run to cut the Rangers' lead back down to seven at 43-36.
After a couple minutes of trading baskets, the Rangers permanently regained a double digit lead off a
Montez Allen jumper with 11:06 to go. Although the Tigers managed to hang around for a while, Northwest continued to hit shots and eventually moved its lead to 19 points with Milton McGee Jr.'s layup at the 3:31 mark of the second half.
Coahoma closed the game with a trio of late three-pointers to cut the lead to 12 but Northwest was never in danger of losing its grip down the stretch, earning the 12-point victory for its second consecutive division victory.
Behind Brand's 14-point effort,
R.J. Duhart totaled 13 points and eight rebounds along with 11 points and seven boards from
Jakobi Pearson. Tunstall also provided nine points and five rebounds in the Rangers' victory.
Kendall Richardson led all scorers with 17 points for Coahoma, while Cornelius Holly and Cortez McCarty put up 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Northwest shot 44 percent from the floor and earned 19 points off the bench with 16 second chance points. Coahoma finished the night shooting 35 percent overall.
