Five-Run Second Inning Lifts #9 Northwest to Victory

SENATOBIA – Behind a two-run single from Brayland Skinner and an RBI-double from Cade Spratlin, ninth-ranked Northwest scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull away for an eventual 8-2 victory against Wallace State at Jim Miles Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Northwest improved to 6-1 on the season as Wallace State dropped to 6-6 overall.

Skinner led things off in the bottom of the first with a single before a failed pickoff advanced him to second. After Noah Hattier's single moved Skinner to third, Kelton Hall drove home the leadoff batter despite grounding into a double play.

Northwest turned up the heat in the second inning as Wesley Lester's single up the middle paved the way for Spratlin's RBI-double, giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

Skinner then singled through the left side to score both Lester from third and Ty Leatherwood from second, extending the Rangers' lead to 4-0. Northwest would add two more runs off a groundout to second and an error, ending the frame with a 6-0 advantage.

Leatherwood's RBI-single to second base in the bottom of the fourth further added to Wallace State's woes, but the Lions would respond with a sac fly RBI in the top of the fifth to get on the board with a 7-1 deficit.

Northwest once again responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth, as Hall's RBI-single to left scored Skinner to make it an 8-1 lead for the Rangers.

Preston Key gave Wallace State another run in the top of the seventh with his RBI-single to right but the Lions showed little signs of a comeback the rest of the way.

Northwest smashed out 15 hits in the contest, led by three from Skinner and two apiece from Hall, Lester, Leatherwood, Spratlin and Peyton Mills.

For as solid as the Rangers were at the plate, Colton Peel was equally as impressive on the mound, totaling eight strikeouts against two walks in six complete innings of work. Jackson Smith and Alonzo Hunt also earned relief appearances, with Hunt closing out the final two frames with three strikeouts and no runs allowed.

Northwest will set its sights on this weekend's homestand which features four games against Olive-Harvey College on Friday and Saturday. The Rangers will host the Panthers on Friday at 2/5 p.m. and on Saturday at 1/4 p.m. with live stats and broadcast links at nwccrangers.com/watch.
