SENATOBIA - A month-long break did nothing to slow down the Northwest men's basketball program on Monday evening, as the Rangers saw seven players record double figures in a 119-69 rout of Tennessee Prep at Howard Coliseum.
Northwest improved to 9-2 on the season and recorded its largest single-game point total since a Nov. 6, 2006 victory at Shorter College.
An early 2-2 tie marked the closest point of the game as Northwest shook off a semi-slow start to pull away for a 21-9 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half. The advantage grew to a 38-24 margin with four minutes remaining and the Rangers capped off the first half with a 16-3 run to make it a 54-27 halftime advantage.
Tennessee Prep found itself in foul trouble early in the second half, further bolstering the Rangers' momentum. Leading 70-44, Northwest rattled off a 20-3 scoring run that included back-to-back slams from
R.J. Duhart, pushing Northwest to a 90-47 lead with just over eight minutes to go.
Northwest would later see its reserves get in on the action, led by 23 points and seven rebounds from
Milton McGee, Jr. Mario Fenner, Jr. would also tally 12 points and four boards in the final minutes of play.
Behind McGee's team-high 23 points, starters Duhart and
Jakobi Pearson added 15 and 17 points, respectively. Duhart also fell shy of a double-double with eight rebounds on the night.
Tomias Brand recorded 12 points for the Rangers, followed by 11 each from
James Richards III and
Montez Allen.
Northwest outscored Tennessee Prep in nearly every category, including bench points (68-22), points off turnovers (27-9) and shot 56 percent from the floor and 50 from beyond the arc.
Northwest will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 9 against Coahoma from Howard Coliseum. Links to live stats and the live broadcast are available at nwccrangers.com.
