SENATOBIA – Four Northwest players finished in double figures on Tuesday night as the Rangers withstood a late rally from Mississippi Delta, pulling out the 73-66 win at Howard Coliseum.
Northwest improved to 10-5 on the season and 2-3 in division play while the Trojans dropped to 7-8 and 0-4 in the division.
Both teams went back and forth in the early goings until just over 11 minutes to go in the first half, when the Rangers would embark on a 17-2 scoring run to take a 28-17 lead with 4:16 remaining in the first half.
A pair of late layups from Cartisco Brown and Chavis Banks brought the deficit down to six, only to see
Kavonte Tunstall's three put Northwest ahead by nine at the break.
Northwest led by 14 points twice in the second half, only to see the Trojans storm back to cut the lead to three after a Terry Wallace three-pointer with 2:04 left.
Although the Trojans got their second wind in the final minute or two of regulation, Northwest issued a response in the form of another Tunstall three and an
R.J. Duhart layup, pushing the Rangers to an eight-point advantage.
A pair of free throws from
Jakobi Pearson would help to ice the game down the stretch for Northwest.
Pearson finished as the Rangers' leading scorer with 16 points on the night, followed by 13 points, six rebounds and four blocks from
R.J. Duhart. Tunstall and
Tomias Brand also contributed 11 points and five rebounds apiece for Northwest.
Mississippi Delta's Terry Wallace led all scorers with 22 points, followed by 17 points from Darius Jackson. Ricardo Lewis led the Trojans with seven rebounds.
Northwest shot 35 percent from the floor, compared to 42 percent from Mississippi Delta.
Northwest will now turn its attention to Holmes on Thursday, Jan. 23 in Goodman.
