RAYMOND – Friday night proved to be quite the evening for the Northwest women's soccer program in a 3-1 road win at Hinds.
Not only did the Lady Rangers earn their first win of the season to improve to 1-2, the win also put NWCC a leg up in the MACJC North Division picture at 1-0.
Similar to its season opener at Dyersburg State last Thursday, the Lady Rangers struck first as
Katelyn Rock connected with
Ally Bailey for a short turn and kick in front of the net in the 14th minute.
Although Hinds turned up the heat on offense following the goal, Northwest held its own for the remainder of the first half and maintained the 1-0 lead at the break.
After Hinds responded just two minutes into the second half on a goal from Becca Blackwell, the duo of Rock and Bailey struck again in the 65th minute to push the Lady Rangers back ahead at 2-1.
Both teams continued with aggressive offensive attacks throughout the second half but the Lady Rangers' back unit continued to stand strong. On the other side,
Isabelle Cardenas provided Northwest with some much-needed breathing room in the 83rd minute, scoring one-on-one against the Hinds keeper for what would prove to be the game-winner.
Northwest was outshot by Hinds 10-7 in the first half but finished the match with a slim 19-18 advantage in that category, although the Lady Eagles held a 14-11 edge in shots on goal.
Freshman
Maggie Olive impressed in her first collegiate start, earning 13 saves for the Lady Rangers. Paula Lopez totaled eight stops for Hinds.
Northwest will open the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. against Meridian. Live stats for the match will be available at nwccrangers.com.
