SENATOBIA – Despite falling short of victory with a late rally in Game 1, Northwest rebounded for a win in the nightcap to salvage a split against Mississippi Delta in the swan song for the sophomore class on Tuesday afternoon.
Northwest moved to 7-34 on the season and 6-20 in conference play as the Lady Trojans fell to 9-34 and 4-20 in the MACJC.
Northwest will close out the 2019 season at No. 12 East Central on Thursday, May 2 in Decatur.
Game 1 – Mississippi Delta 4, Northwest 3
Although the Rangers used the bottom of the seventh to rally back from a 4-1 deficit, the late surge fell just short as Mississippi Delta came away with the rare victory over Northwest in the afternoon opener.
Mississippi Delta took a 2-0 lead in the second inning off an error at second base and a two-run single to right field in the seventh provided an additional pair of runs for the Lady Trojans.
A sac fly to center from
Shelby Wilson in the third gave the Rangers a run but it would be the final frame where Northwest found some late magic, thanks to a solo homer from
Kristen Perrigo and another run off an error at third.
Northwest was unable to complete the comeback however, as a flyout to center field and a 6-5 putout on a fielder's choice solidified the win for Mississippi Delta.
Sarah Johnson fell to 3-7 with the loss in the circle, allowing two unearned runs and three strikeouts against a walk.
Katie Brownlee also struck out four in a solid relief outing.
Perrigo and
Madison Crosby led the Rangers at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively.
Game 2 – Northwest 3, Mississippi Delta 1
Northwest pounded out eight hits behind a strong performance from
Lacey Coats, providing the sophomores with one final win on the home turf.
Scoreless heading into the bottom of the third,
Delta Claire Newman got the Rangers on the board with an RBI-single to right field to score Crosby from third.
Newman and
Maddy Politte would deliver a pair of additional runs in the fifth with back-to-back RBI-singles to stretch the Rangers' lead to 3-0.
An unearned run from Mississippi Delta in the sixth proved to be the only blemish for Northwest defensively, as Coats went the distance with three strikeouts against a walk, improving her record to 7-11 in the circle.
Crosby and Newman finished 2-for-3 at the plate with Newman providing two RBIs.
