SENATOBIA – Behind a combined total of 25 hits, Northwest earned its second conference sweep of the season on Tuesday afternoon against Coahoma.
Northwest improved to 11-13-1, 5-7 in the MACJC while Coahoma remained winless on the season at 0-20 and 0-12 in conference play.
Game 1 – Northwest 14, Coahoma 4 (5)
A seven-run first inning helped set the tone early in the Rangers' run-rule Game 1 victory.
Kristen Perrigo highlighted the first inning with a three-run triple, along with RBI-base hits from
Shelby Wilson,
Katie Brownlee and
Avery McIver.
Gracey Griggs would make it an 8-0 lead with her sac fly in the second inning.
After Coahoma got a run back in the top of the third, Northwest added four more in the bottom of the frame off a wild pitch and a pair of RBI-base hits from
Delta Claire Newman and
Briley Terry to push the Ranger lead to 12-1.
Trailing 14-1 and down to its last three outs of the run-rule, Coahoma found a brief spark with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but
Lacey Coats delivered three big strikeouts to put the brakes on any rally from the Lady Tigers.
Coats improved to 4-6 on the season with a career-high eight strikeouts against two earned runs and no walks.
Northwest put out 11 hits in the win with Brownlee, Wilson and Crosby finishing with two apiece.
Game 2 – Northwest 11, Coahoma 7
Thanks to 11 hits and a solid relief outing from Brownlee, Northwest was able to fend off a feisty effort from Coahoma in the nightcap to pick up the sweep.
After Mekayla Hubbard's two-run homer put the Lady Tigers up 2-0 early in the first, the Rangers responded with seven runs over the next three innings to pull ahead 7-2.
Hubbard would strike again for Coahoma in the fourth in the form of a grand slam, trimming the Ranger lead down to one, 7-6.
Although the Rangers allowed another run from the Lady Tigers in the seventh, Northwest created plenty of seperation at the plate in the fourth and sixth innings, picking up two runs in both frames to stay well ahead at 11-7.
Brownlee improved to 5-4 in the circle with the win, striking out five and allowing just one earned run in 3.2 innings of work.
Sarah Johnson started the contest and tossed 3.1 innings, allowing three walks and a pair of earned runs.
Perrigo led the Rangers again in the nightcap, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI as Brownlee and Johnson also finished with two hits apiece.
Weather permitting, Northwest will host Southwest Mississippi on Saturday, April 6 at 1/3 p.m. in Senatobia. Live stats will be available at nwccrangers.com.
