Coats Throws No-Hitter as Rangers Snap Losing Skid

SENATOBIA – Behind a combination of Lacey Coats' no-hitter and nine Northwest hits, the Rangers snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 5-0 win against Southwest Mississippi before dropping the nightcap 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Northwest moved to 6-33 overall and 5-19 in the MACJC*, while Southwest Mississippi moved to 28-11 and 15-9 in conference play.

Northwest will close out the home portion of its schedule with Sophomore Day on Tuesday, April 30 against Mississippi Delta. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Game 1 – Northwest 5, Southwest Mississippi 0

Coats (6-11) went the distance in the circle for the Rangers, striking out six against two walks and allowed no-hits for a 5-0 victory in Game 1.

Scoreless after two complete, Northwest got on the board in the bottom of the third with Brittni Beard's two-run single into right center.

Madison Crosby would help the Rangers add to its lead with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, good for her second career home run.

Crosby and Politte led Northwest with two hits apiece, while five other Rangers scattered one hit apiece.

Game 2 – Southwest Mississippi 4, Northwest 0

After being shutout in the first game, Southwest Mississippi would respond by outhitting Northwest 7-4 in a 4-0 shutout victory to deny Northwest the sweep.

An error on Terrah Nelson's bunt in the second allowed the Bears to strike first and Southwest Mississippi followed by adding another run in the third.

Josey Nations helped the Bears add to their lead in the fourth with a two-run single. Despite being held scoreless over the final three frames, Northwest was unable to respond, sealing the victory for Southwest Mississippi.

Sarah Johnson fell to 3-6 in the circle, allowing an unearned run and two strikeouts in two innings of work. Taylor Lott finished 2-for-3 to lead the Rangers at the plate.

Jade Latham went the distance for the Bears, striking out eight and allowing no walks to improve her record to 13-6.
