Balanced Day at the Plate Leads to Split at Southwest Tennessee

CORDOVA, Tenn. – Ten different Rangers combined for 20 hits on the day and Northwest got another strong start from Lacey Coats in the opener in a split against Southwest Tennessee on Monday afternoon by 8-1 (W) and 7-4 (L) finals.

The doubleheader was played at St. Benedict at Auburndale High School in Cordova.

Northwest moved to 6-8-1 overall while Southwest Tennessee moved to 18-9.

Game 1 – Northwest 8, Southwest 1

Coats worked 5.1 strong innings, scattering three hits, no earned runs and six strikeouts and Northwest took advantage of seven Lady Saluqi errors to win the opener in convincing fashion.

Gracey Griggs' RBI-double put the Rangers on the board in the second and they would add three more in the fourth, thanks in large part to a pair of Lady Saluqi errors, to pull ahead 4-0.

Southwest's lone run came in the fourth on MaKayla Pugh's RBI-double to right field.

A perfectly executed double steal extended the lead to 5-1 in the sixth, with pinch runner Ana Green stealing second and Brittni Beard coming home.

Northwest put it away in the seventh after back-to-back doubles from Delta Claire Newman and Sarah Johnson to start the frame. Beard and Green both picked up RBIs in the inning to make it 8-1.

Newman, Johnson and Beard finished with two hits each as Northwest out-hit Southwest 10-4.

Game 2 – Southwest 7, Northwest 4

Nine different Rangers combined for another 10-hit game, but it wasn't enough as Southwest used three runs in both the third and fifth innings to jump out to a big lead early.

After going up 1-0 in the third on Johnson's sac fly to center, the Lady Saluqis responded with three in the bottom half to take their first lead of the day. Jessie Bryant hit a towering three-run shot on a 3-2, two-out count.

Northwest cut the lead to 3-2 an inning later on Maddy Politte's sac fly, only to see Southwest answer with a run.

Southwest then pulled away in the fifth, using three straight singles after a leadoff groundout and then scoring two more with two outs to make it 7-2.

Griggs doubled in the sixth to score Taylor Lott and Politte singled to score Avery McIver to pull the final margin to 7-4.

Mattie King improved to 4-1 for Southwest in four innings of work, while Destiny Upton picked up her team-leading fifth save in three relief innings.

Northwest will step back into MACJC play on Wednesday, playing host to winless East Mississippi (0-7, 0-2).
