Sykes' Double-Double Lone Bright Spot in Loss at Northeast

BOONEVILLE – Freshman forward Tamarah Sykes posted her fourth career double-double in one of the few bright spots for Northwest on Thursday night, as the Lady Rangers fell 73-47 to Northeast.

With the loss, Northwest fell to 7-12 overall and dropped to 2-7 in the north after a 2-1 division start. Northeast jumped to 13-6 and 6-3 with the victory.

Forward Mallory Russell provided the first field goal of the game over three minutes in, as her layup gave Northwest a brief 2-1 lead.

After Cherelle Jones quickly responded with a layup of her own, the Lady Tigers gained a 3-2 advantage and never looked back, ultimately outscoring the Lady Rangers 17-5 in the first quarter.

Northeast continued to build on its lead in the second quarter, leading by as many as 26 before heading into halftime with a 24-point cushion, 44-20.

There would be no second half slowdown in store for the Lady Tigers, as the deficit swelled to as many as 34 for the Lady Rangers in the fourth quarter. Northwest managed to pull back under 20 late in the contest but it did little to minimize the damage.

Northwest shot just 29 percent from the floor and was just 3-of-20 (15%) from beyond the arc, compared to 37 and 50 percent for Northeast, respectively.

Sykes was the only Lady Ranger to finish in double figures, scoring 14 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kayla Bradley added seven points and four rebounds, followed by five points apiece from Lindsay Hall and Ariel Tunstall.

Northeast was sparked by a 26 point outing from Dayzsha Rogan with 20 of her points coming in the first half.

Northwest returns to Howard Coliseum on Monday, Feb. 11, looking to snap the six-game losing skid against East Mississippi. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. with live video and live stats carried on nwccrangers.com.
