Tunstall Shines Despite Northwest Loss

SENATOBIA – Freshman guard Ariel Tunstall scored a career-high 16 points to lead all Northwest scorers but the Lady Rangers' losing skid continued with a 58-48 loss against East Mississippi on Monday night.

Northwest dropped to 7-13 overall and 2-8 in the division with its seventh straight loss. EMCC improved to 10-11 on the season and 7-3 in the MACJC North.

Leading 15-3 after the first eight minutes of the opening quarter, the Lady Rangers surrendered a 9-0 run that stretched into the second quarter and brought EMCC back within 15-12.

A layup from Tamarah Sykes bumped the Northwest lead back up to five midway through the second quarter, but the Lady Lions would outscore Northwest 18-8 in the quarter to take a 26-23 halftime advantage.

Northwest got the second half off to a solid start, thanks to three straight baskets from Tunstall, Sydney Liddell and Lindsay Hall that allowed the Lady Rangers to regain a 29-28 lead.

After Hall's three stretched the lead back to five, East Mississippi responded over the final few minutes of the third quarter, jumping ahead 48-44 entering the final 10 minutes of play.

Much like the second quarter, the Lady Rangers struggled finding points in the fourth quarter as EMCC outscored Northwest 10-4 and pulled away for the 10-point victory.

Northwest shot 38 percent from the floor against 29 percent from East Mississippi, but the Lady Lions dominated in points off turnovers (25-2) and second choice points (16-5). The Lady Rangers outscored EMCC 16-6 off the bench and 24-20 in the paint.

Behind Tunstall's career night, sophomore Kayla Bradley added nine points and four rebounds along with eight points and six rebounds from Liddell.

Northwest will host Mississippi Delta on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m. for sophomore night and the final home contest of the season. Both the game and the ceremony will be streamed live on nwccrangers.com.
