SENATOBIA – Northwest used 22 combined hits and a dominant Game 2 outing from
Sarah Johnson to sweep Coahoma on Thursday afternoon in Senatobia, 8-1 and 9-1 at the Senatobia Sports Park.
Madison Crosby went 4-for-6 on the day with four RBIs and sophomore
Shelby Wilson finished 5-for-8 with five RBIs to lead the Rangers at the plate.
Game 1 – Northwest 8, Coahoma 1
Behind a season-high 13 hits, Northwest defeated Coahoma after breaking a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the third and five in the fifth.
After
Maddy Politte's single through the left side, the Rangers got the benefit of a walk and hit by pitch to set up Wilson's two-run double to center field, which gave the Rangers a 3-1 in the bottom of the third.
Freshman
Lacey Coats would enter the circle in the fifth in relief of Brownlee, surrendering just one hit and tossing a pair of strikeouts in three innings of work.
Northwest broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, as Crosby and
Kristen Perrigo delivered a pair of two-run base hits along with
Avery McIver's bunt single that scored Perrigo from third, bringing the score to its final result of 8-1.
Wilson led the way with three hits as Crosby, Perrigo, McIver and
Taylor Lott finished with two hits apiece.
Brownlee picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the season, striking out six batters over four frames.
Game 2 – Northwest 9, Coahoma 1 (5)
For the second time in the Rangers' young season, Johnson went the distance in the circle for Northwest and notched a career-high 10 strikeouts in a 9-1 run-rule victory in the nightcap.
After two scoreless innings, Northwest got hot in the bottom of the third with a seven-run frame that was highlighted by a two-run homer for
Gracey Griggs, the first home run of the season for the Rangers.
Coahoma got a run back in the top of the fourth with a bases loaded walk to Sydni Moore, but Johnson escaped another bases loaded jam with a strikeout of Brittany Burchfield to end the inning.
Northwest would settle things for good in the bottom of the fifth, as Wilson's two-run double to right center scored McIver and Perrigo for the run-rule.
Wilson and Crosby went 2-for-4 (3 RBI) and 2-for-3 (2 RBI), respectively.
Johnson improved to 1-1 on the season with her victory, allowing three hits and a pair of walks.
Northwest improved to 2-2 overall and will face a trio of games against John A. Logan, Shawnee and Frontier in Saturday's Farewell to Carnell Classic in Booneville.
