SENATOBIA – Trailing by as many as 15 and for all but 1:50 on the night, Northwest got it within a one possession game eight times over the final two minutes but just couldn't find the clutch basket when they needed it in falling 94-93 to Mississippi Delta Thursday night.
MDCC swept the season series for the first time in nine years to improve to 9-12 overall and 4-6 in the north, while Northwest fell to 11-10 and 4-7 in division play.
All five starters on both teams finished in double figures on the night in what turned out to be a fantastic back-and-forth game.
Northwest led just once in the second half, 72-69, on
Jitaurious Gordon's 3-pointer and
Kendrick Fountain's jumper with 7:59 to play.
The game ultimately came down to big shots down the stretch, with MDCC hitting six of its final seven shots.
Twice the game was tied with under 5:14 to play, but both times the Trojans found baskets on their ensuing possessions to push back in front.
Quez Williamson's 3-pointer with five seconds left brought the final margin to 94-93.
The trio of Gordon, Williamson and Fountain combined for 41 of the Rangers' 55 second half points. Gordon finished with a game-high 24 and Fountain added 23.
MDCC shot 54 percent on the night against 45 percent for the Rangers.
The Rangers end the regular season next Monday at Holmes and will need some help from MDCC and Itawamba to clinch the north's fourth and final playoff spot.
