GOODMAN – Four Rangers scored in double figures as Northwest swept Holmes for the first time in five seasons with a thrilling 83-81 victory on Monday night.
Leading 5-0 early on, Northwest kept up the pace with a 19-7 advantage midway through the first half.
Holmes quickly responded with a nice run of its own over the latter portion of the first half and led the Rangers by eight at the halftime break, 47-39.
After slicing the Bulldogs' lead to 55-52 with 13:47 to go in regulation, the Rangers forced a 60-60 tie nearly three minutes later, as both teams would spend the final 10 minutes and change of the second half going back and forth in a classic shootout.
Northwest never led by much over the final minutes of action, but used 54 percent shooting from the floor and 58 percent from the charity stripe to keep the Bulldogs at bay down the stretch.
Leading 83-81 with less than 10 seconds to go, the Northwest defense put the stops on Holmes' last second shot attempt, sealing the road win.
Holmes outscored Northwest 62-9 in points off the bench, but the Rangers edged the Bulldogs 15-11 in points off turnovers. In a narrow margin, the Bulldogs also out-rebounded the Rangers 41-38.
Quez Williamson led all Northwest scorers with 22 points and eight rebounds, as Nicholls State signee
Jitaurious Gordon collected his 11th 20-point performance of the season with 20 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to finish just shy of a triple-double.
Alec Rayburn and
Ernest Minton rounded out the Rangers in double figures, scoring 14 and 12 respectively.
Czar Perry led Holmes with 27 points and seven boards, followed by 22 points and nine rebounds from Kassim Nicholson.
With Mississippi Delta's win against Northeast on Monday night, the Rangers will miss out on the MACJC Tournament, ending the 2018-19 season at 12-10 overall and 5-7 in the division.
