Late Run Helps Northwest Seal Win Against Hinds

SENATOBIA – Trailing 41-37 to start the fourth period, the Northwest Lady Rangers recovered from a low nine-point effort in the third to score 23 in the final 10 minutes, defeating Hinds 60-55 on Thursday night at Howard Coliseum.

Northwest improved to 4-2 overall with the victory while Hinds dropped to 1-2 on the year.

Mallory Russell got the Lady Rangers started with back-to-back layups and an early three-pointer from Lindsay Hall helped break a 6-6 tie. Hall's basket helped spark an 8-0 run for Northwest, as Zaniayah Daniel capped off the scoring burst with a three of her own to give the Lady Rangers a 14-6 lead with two minutes left in the period.

McKinley Ware's three helped Hinds trim the lead to 16-12 at the end of the first period before Amaz Carmichael began to take over. Northwest never lost the lead in the first half but Carmichael's 14 points and eight rebounds helped keep the Lady Bulldogs within striking distance at the break, trailing just 28-24.

A three-point basket from Kerrigan Johnson gave Hinds its first lead of the game with 2:25 left in the third period and the guard would respond with another shot from beyond the arc with 23 seconds left to push the Lady Bulldogs to a 41-37 advantage.

Down by five with 3:47 left, Northwest used back-to-back three pointers from Daniel to spark a 14-4 run to close out regulation, regaining the lead for good in the non-division victory.

Daniel and Russell led the Lady Rangers with 12 points apiece with Russell also earning eight rebounds. Kayla Freeman also finished with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Carmichael totaled 23 points and 21 rebounds to lead Hinds in the losing effort.

Northwest will close out the NWCC Tournament on Friday, Nov. 22 against unbeaten Snead State. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. from Howard Coliseum.
