Lady Rangers Topple Undefeated Snead State, 89-71

SENATOBIA – Freshman Morgan Hodum delivered a season-high 19 points and shot 75 percent from three-point range as Northwest upended a previously unbeaten Snead State squad, 89-71, on Friday afternoon at Howard Coliseum.

With its third straight victory, Northwest improved to 5-2 on the season as Snead State dropped to 7-1 overall.

Northwest never trailed by more than five during the entirety of the contest and regained the lead for good on a jumper from I'esha Mosby late in the first period.

Leading 18-14 entering the second period, the Lady Rangers wasted little time creating some separation from Snead State. Northwest went on an 11-4 run, highlighted by a pair of threes from Hodum, stretching its lead to 29-18 with 6:22 remaining in the first half.

Although Connie Clarke helped the Lady Parsons trim the lead down to four with less than two minutes remaining, Tamarah Sykes would get the Lady Rangers back to a seven-point margin with a jumper and a pair of free throws. The mini scoring outburst from Sykes helped Northwest take a 38-31 lead into halftime.

Both teams traded baskets for the early stages of the second half, as Snead State remained within striking distance with baskets from Tamia Knight and Tytiana Pickett. The Lady Rangers never surrendered the lead however, eventually pulling ahead by 16 with 2:17 left in the third period.

Northwest never took its foot off the pedal in the final 10 minutes, leading by double digits the entire way and cruising to the 18-point victory.

In addition to her 19 points, Hodum also collected four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Sykes added 16 points and seven boards off the bench. Mosby chipped in 10 points and five assists in a reserve role as well.

Mallory Russell fell just short of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds, while Kayla Freeman also added nine points and five rebounds.

Knight and Clarke led Snead State with 20 and 15 point-efforts, respectively.

Northwest will continue non-division action over Thanksgiving Break, competing in a neutral site tournament at Mississippi Delta. The Lady Rangers will face Dyersburg State on Monday, Nov. 25 and Baton Rouge on Tuesday, Nov. 26, with both games tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. start times in Moorhead.
