Rangers Collect Season Sweep of Arkansas Baptist

SENATOBIA – Six Rangers finished in double figures as Northwest defeated Arkansas Baptist for the second time this season, picking up a 92-72 victory at Howard Coliseum on Tuesday night.

Northwest's win allowed the Rangers to earn the season sweep against Arkansas Baptist for the first time in six years, as interim coach Shane Oakley improved his team's winning streak to four. The Rangers also improved their record to 7-3 overall, while Arkansas Baptist fell to 5-11 on the season.

Northwest wasted little time getting on the board, as Kendrick Fountain drained an open three just four seconds after tipoff. The Rangers spent the majority of the opening 10 minutes on top, stretching their lead to 23-11 with 10:30 left before halftime.

Trailing by 14 with 8:54 left to go in the first half, Arkansas Baptist took advantage of a brief Ranger lull and managed to trim the lead down to nine, only to have Northwest close the final five minutes of the first half on a 19-4 scoring run that would give the Rangers a 50-26 halftime advantage.

Arkansas Baptist once again found a little spark in the first few minutes of the second half, as Jerimiah Price capped off a 14-6 run with a dunk in the paint that pulled the Buffaloes back under 20.

Alec Rayburn would then get the Rangers back in sync on the other end with a floater from beyond the arc, sparking what would become a 21-1 run over a near-four minute span that pushed the Northwest lead to 77-41.

Northwest would remain on cruise control for the remainder of regulation, leading by 19 or more for the last 12 minutes of the contest.

Rayburn tied a career-high of 14 points, while Jitaurious Gordon led all scorers with 18 points and five rebounds. Nick Edwards and Montez Allen also delivered solid performances off the bench, scoring 13 and 11 respectively, as Devon Benson (11) and Fountain (10) rounded out the Rangers in double figures.

Freshman Ernest Minton also had a solid night on the boards, pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds to go with six points.

Arkansas Baptist also had four players reach double figures, led by 16 from Price and 15 from Brennan Johnson.

Northwest shot 43 percent from field goal range against 29 percent from the Buffaloes. The Rangers also dominated in second chance and bench points, outscoring Arkansas Baptist 25-10 and 49-20 in both categories.

Northwest will now set its sights on division play, as the Rangers battle Coahoma on Thursday, Jan. 10 in Clarksdale. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. and can be seen live on coahomasports.com/watch.
