SENATOBIA – Behind a career-high 28 points from sophomore guard
Kayla Bradley, Northwest managed to hold off a feisty Northeast effort at Howard Coliseum on Monday night, defeating the Lady Tigers 69-64.
With the victory, the Lady Rangers pushed their record over .500 for the first time this season and improved to 7-6, 2-1 in the division. The win also marked the third straight for the Lady Rangers and fifth in the last six games, dating back to Nov. 27.
Northeast fell to 8-5 overall and 1-2 in the MACJC North Division.
Northeast had a hot hand early in Dayzsha Rogan, as the sophomore standout scored seven of the Lady Tigers' 16 first quarter points.
Trailing 16-10 with 2:21 left in the opening quarter, the Lady Rangers got a boost with a layup from
Ericka Richardson and a
Madison Pharr three-pointer that allowed Northwest to cut the lead down to one as time expired in the first quarter.
Lindsay Hall opened the second quarter with a bang, draining a three that gave Northwest a brief 18-16 lead, before Northeast responded with a pair of layups from Rogan and Quitonya Webster to regain the lead.
Despite trailing for the majority of the second quarter, the Lady Rangers responded yet again with a 13-4 run over the final three minutes of the first half, sending Northwest into halftime with a four point lead, 41-37.
Northwest was unable to entirely pull away in the second half, as both teams remained within striking distance of one another. The Lady Rangers led by as many as seven and only surrendered the lead twice, both by one point margins in the fourth quarter.
After Northeast tied the contest at 64 with off Takeria Newson's layup with 1:26 left to go, Northwest held the Lady Tigers scoreless the rest of the way, as
I'esha Mosby's tip-in and three made free throws allowed the Lady Rangers to seal a division victory on the home floor.
Bradley's 28 points also came with four rebounds and four steals, while Richardson and Hall also finished in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Freshman
Ariel Tunstall also had a big night on the boards, pulling down a team-leading six rebounds in the Lady Ranger win.
Rogan led all scorers with 30 points and nine rebounds for Northeast, falling just shy of a double-double. Cherelle Jones (11 points, 13 rebs.), Adryana Bell (12 rebs.) and Dominique Caldwell (10 points) also paced the Lady Tigers with solid performances.
Northwest will aim to keep its newfound momentum alive on Thursday, Jan. 17, when the Lady Rangers travel to East Mississippi (5-9, 2-1 division) at 5:30 p.m. in Scooba.
