FULTON – For a third time in the last five meetings, Northwest and Itawamba needed extra time to ultimately decide a winner.
The host Lady Indians found the golden goal just 22 seconds into the first overtime period, with Grace Joyce taking a rebound shot after a save by
Angel Hailey and scoring for a 3-2 Itawamba win.
Itawamba improved to 4-0 overall, its best start ever, and 2-0 in the division while Northwest dropped to 3-3 and 1-1.
Northwest had the upper hand early, taking a 2-0 lead on goals by
Breane Podhaisky and
Cheyenne Smith in the 12th and 22nd minutes. For Smith, it was her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
But it was ICC who rallied for three unanswered goals over the final 69 minutes, the first coming from Brittany Mathis to make it a 2-1 Lady Ranger lead at the break.
The Lady Indians owned a 11-4 shot advantage in the first half and continued to apply pressure in the second half to hold a 28-7 edge for the match.
Hailey did all she could to keep Northwest on top with 13 saves, her sixth career match with double digit saves.
Francisca Galleguill helped ICC find the equalizer in the 48th minute and Joyce had the game-winner in overtime.
Northwest was held to five shots on goal, scoring on two of them, while ICC finished with 17 shots-on-goal.
The Lady Rangers will travel to Hinds on Tuesday, Sept. 11 for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
