Northwest Splits at Coahoma, Moves into Tie for Fourth in MACJC

CLARKSDALE – Northwest and Coahoma split a pair of tightly-contested baseball games at the Eddie Smith Sportsplex on Thursday, with the Tigers rallying for three runs in ninth to stun the Rangers in the opener, 6-5, before a 4-3 win for Northwest in the finale.

Northwest improved to 17-9 overall and 7-5 in the MACJC, moving into a tie for fourth in the league standings. Coahoma moved to 16-14 and 4-8, beating the Rangers for just the third time in the last 23 meetings.

Reed Logsdon did enough to earn a win in the opener but took the no-decision, tossing six strong innings and allowing just two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Harrison Sandridge was equally impressive, going five innings and allowing two earned runs for his fourth straight quality start.

Northwest will close out a season-long 12-game road trip on Sunday, April 8 (was Saturday) at Southwest Mississippi. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.

Game 1 – Coahoma 6, Northwest 5

Northwest held Coahoma to three hits through eight innings, but the Tigers found new life in the ninth with four straight singles and Zac Gilder's sac fly to walk-off for a 6-5 win.

Tied at 2-2 through four, RBI-singles from Brant Blaylock and Grant McMinn opened up a 4-2 Ranger lead in the fifth.

After an RBI-single from Joe Gee pulled Coahoma within 4-3 after six, Ian Hawkins tossed two shutout innings in relief of Logsdon and got a solo homer from Ben Van Cleve to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Blaylock, who hadn't allowed a run in 5.1 relief innings all season, entered for Hawkins on the mound to try and close things out. But the sophomore was touched for four straight singles, after a 6-3 groundout to start the inning, before Gilder's sac fly to center plated the winning run for Coahoma.

Rafael De Leon (3-3) got the win for the Tigers on the mound, holding the Rangers to one run on two hits in four relief innings of Eduardo Munoz.

Northwest out-hit Coahoma 9-7, with two hits each from Blaylock, McMinn and Hunter White.

Game 2 – Northwest 4, Coahoma 3

The Rangers got the feeling of deja vu in the finale, holding a one-run advantage for the final four innings. This time Northwest sealed the deal, however, with Drew Hurst throwing two shutout frames in relief of Sandridge for his first save of the year and a 4-3 Ranger win to earn the split.

Coahoma led 1-0 after one on Marquellus Edgeston's RBI-groundout and 2-1 after two thanks to a Ranger throwing error.

Northwest took its first lead in the fourth, 3-2, using a leadoff single from Van Cleve and double from McMinn and scoring them on a wild pitch and RBI-groundout from Brooks Boolos.

The teams exchanged single runs in the sixth on a McMinn RBI-single and solo home run from Zac Gilder.

After the Gilder home run, Hurst entered for Sandridge and got a strikeout and double play to end the frame and preserve a 4-3 lead after six. He'd set the Tigers down in order in the seventh as well, getting a fly out and back-to-back strikeouts to close out his first career save.

McMinn and Van Cleve led the Rangers with two hits apiece.
